Together We Rise Public Art Installation - May 2023

The Fine Arts Center is a 501(c)(3) non-profit community arts organization celebrating its 46th year in 2024. Our primary location is in the Historic Commercial District of Pulaski, VA, with a satellite location now open at 860 University City Boulevard (Suite 105) in Blacksburg, VA.

We are dedicated to providing the citizens of the New River Valley with a full range of arts programming, including art education classes for children and adults; rotating exhibits and a variety of performances that feature local artists; as well as offering original, handmade work from New River Valley artists in our gift shop.

The Center is governed by a Board of Directors comprised of artists, arts educators, and supporters of the arts. We also benefit from community volunteers as well as volunteers from the New River Community College ACCE program and the Goodwill SCSEP program. In the last fiscal year, the Fine Arts Center received the equivalent of more than $30,000 of in-kind contributions as represented by more than 1,000 hours logged by volunteers. We are truly a community organization.

The Fine Arts Center operates through generous support from donors and members along with grant funding.  Sponsors of the Center’s many activities include the C. E. Richardson Benevolent Foundation, the National Endowment for the Arts, Pulaski County, the Randolph House of Pulaski Foundation, the Secular Society, the Town of Pulaski, and the Virginia Commission for the Arts, and individual sponsors.

Mission

Believing that art is important to the life of a community, our purpose is to foster an enjoyment, appreciation, and understanding of all forms of art, promote art education, and to encourage and support artists.

We do this with a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion. We seek to be a place of belonging and to provide equitable opportunities and access to the Fine Arts for all people.

Our History

The Gallery at the Fine Arts Center

The Fine Arts Center for the New River Valley was incorporated in 1978 in Pulaski, Virginia. The Center was originally located in the Fairview Home, which was a 1928 Alms House located across from the current site of Pulaski County High School. In 1982, the Center moved to its present location of 21 West Main Street, located in the former Cato’s clothing store. The two-story brick building, reminiscent of Victorian era commercial architecture, was built in 1898 and is part of the Downtown Historic Landmark District.

The Fine Arts Center was created out of a desire to augment the arts education offered in the school systems and to provide a vehicle for the arts presentation to the residents of the New River Valley.  In more than 40 years of operation, the Fine Arts Center has touched the lives of an estimated 100,000 people through classes, gallery visits, performances, and special events.  The Center has hosted a combination of more than 5,500 classes or programs involving 30,000 plus artists.

In 2019, the Board of Directors approved the naming of the art gallery in the Center after one of the Fine Arts Center’s founders, Mrs. Edna Love. We are grateful for the legacy of art education, appreciation, promotion, and generous sharing that Edna Love created throughout her career as an artist and teacher, benefiting so many in the New River Valley.
