Make Art: Susan Lockwood, Artist at Home
Susan Lockwood is a current member of the Board of Directors of the Fine Arts Center for the New River Valley. After her successful corporate career, she now has more time to devote to her artistic passion—photography.
Since leaving my 20+ year corporate career, I have discovered immense bliss through photography. Photography allows me to express the way I view the world around me and translate this vision to others. Sharing the vast visual richness which connects us defines me as an artist.
I experience great pleasure in discussing my work with others and take notice of how we all see so differently. I get to do this through annual solo exhibitions at my home or invitations to display at corporate settings or outdoor shows,
The medium of photography also allows me to leave behind a rich legacy for the many who have purchased my work as well as those who have received them as gifts.
My adrenalin flows freely whenever engaged in my art, no matter where my journey takes me. I am also drawn to scenes incorporating architectural elements which became the theme for my very first solo exhibition at Radford University in the early '90s. Recent works center on a spectacular two-week visit to the Provence region of France. Unfortunately, Covid19 cancelled a 10-day train tour covering the midWest and Western coast of the United States.
The prevalence of mobile phone photography, what some call “iPhoneogrpahy,” allows widespread capabilities for the medium, an advantage for most people in lieu of a 35mm camera, which is what I use. In essence, anyone can be a photographer with their mobile phone in hand.
