Make Art: Langley Anderson

The art that I most enjoy creating is photography of people, cars, and nature. My most recent work focuses on a relationship between science and art. As I walk through my garden, I find objects that intrigue me with their intricate detail: billowy curves of lichen, delicate articulations of insects, sinuous scales of snakeskin. I see a parallel between the structure of these specimens and the elements of art and design. I want to know more about the construction of these tiny subjects, so I enlarge and photograph them using microscopes.   I digitally enhance the images and add vibrant hues to reveal a world of fascinating form.

This is important to me because I wish to show a mutualism between art and science. By presenting these objects in a larger format, I hope that viewers will notice what they might normally pass by.

While I currently do not have access to microscopes, I continue to collect specimens and work on editing the backlog of images that I have in my computer. To anyone who wants to make art at home, just take the time to observe. With a camera, a cell phone, or a pencil and paper, you can capture shadows, lines, texture, shapes…Challenge yourself to capture scenes from different angles and perspectives: crouch down low, peer through a fence, look up. There is so much one can learn by just looking.
