Make Art: Jennifer Spoon, Artist at Home

Associate Professor Emerita from Radford University, Jennifer Spoon, shares her evocative creations in mixed media, many of which are based on her travels across the globe.

I enjoy working in collage and any water medium, especially handmade paper. Lately I’ve explored the beauty of the natural world with a view to human intersection. By casting light on current events. I ask audiences to contemplate the world a bit differently. Paper making is initially very wet, and I paint with colored pulp. Then I work in collage and computage after drying the handmade sheets combining my handmade paper with drawing and photography manipulated on the computer. Making art encourages me to take a break from the disasters of the day.

I recently had the opportunity to work and exhibit in Paris and found inspiration in the ephemera I found while exploring the city. As a graphic designer, I respond to the typography, the gesture and the verbal as well as visual.

Be a generalist and if you find a method of working, a medium, and/or a subject that fascinates, dive in deeper.
