Find Something Fun To Do at the Fine Arts Center in May
Between classes for children and adults, our first exhibition in over a year, and a socially-distanced outdoor concert, the Fine Arts Center for the New River Valley is beginning to offer safe opportunities for residents in our region to enjoy the arts during the month of May. Check out these offerings!
Second Saturday Workshops: Pysanky Eggs
Dr. Kim Lewis is hosting a two-workshop series on the beautiful craft of creating pysanky, or Ukranian Eggs. Her first workshop, offered online on Saturday, May 8, will provide an overview of this fascinating style of decorative art. She’ll follow up with an in-person workshop at the Center on Saturday, May 22, in which you will receive and decorate eggs that have been prepared for you. The $36 cost of the course includes both workshops and a prepared goose egg.
Second Saturday Art Café for Children: Paint with Scissors
Younger artists will enjoy our FREE Art Café in which they will use scissors to make art like the famous artist, Henri Matisse. Kits will allow children to “Paint with Scissors” using colored paper, and who knows, maybe they’ll continue into larger projects like Matisse. Parents, please register online to be a part of this program.
Jam with the Groove Houndz on Saturday, May 28
Spring is here and we all want to get outside, and after a tumultuous year we can start doing that! The Fine Arts Center is proud to announce our first outdoor concert in over a year. We will be featuring local favorites, the Groove Houndz, at an outdoor concert on Saturday, May 28. We’ll still follow guidelines for keeping everyone safe and healthy. The concert will be held on the Commerce Street parking lot in downtown Pulaski. The parking lot will open at 5 p.m. and Donna Surber’s Food Services food truck will be available. The concert starts at 6 p.m. and we hope to have some special guest performers. We are suggesting a $25 donation per car, and donations of $25 or more qualify you for membership at the Center and discounts on classes and items in the gift shop for a year!
Permanent Collection Retrospective
The Fine Arts Center began in 1978, and since that time, the Center has worked to not only showcase the work of artists in the region, but to actually collect some of it, as well. We are excited that we will start opening for limited showings of selections from our Permanent Collection, including some new additions this year. The Retrospective exhibit will open in late May, in time for the Groove Houndz concert, and run through June. Specific details about opening times and associated events will follow on this blog. We look forward to seeing you in the Center once again!
