Southwest Virginia Scholastic Art Awards Show is Open
Award-winning art from students in grades 7-12 from across Southwest Virginia can be seen in the Edna B. Love Gallery at the Fine Arts Center. Be prepared to be amazed!
This is year 101 for the Scholastic Awards, the nation’s longest-running and most prestigious art competition for teen artists. Coordinated by the Alliance for Young Artists & Writers, the Fine Arts Center sponsors the awards for students in 23 counties and the towns and cities within across Southwest Virginia. Student artwork is judged by panels of experienced artists across 16 categories of art. This year was no exception to the high standards of quality and artistic talent of our young artists.

Student artwork that wins a Gold Key at the regional level move on to complete for awards and more than $13,000 in scholarships at the national level. This year, the Fine Arts Center has also awarded $250 scholarships to the top five high school art entries across all categories. These works are also designated as an American Visions Nominee and compete against other nominees across the country for top awards. In addition, one middle school student was awarded a $250 scholarship for Outstanding Middle School Entry.
The student artists and their teachers will be celebrated at a reception and awards ceremony on Saturday, February 24. The event will begin at noon at the Fine Arts Center and move across the street at 2 p.m. to the Pulaski Theatre. Student artwork is on display in the gallery until that day, which features guest speaker Will Sawyer from Radford University’s Art Department. The public is invited to attend or to stop by the gallery any day during open hours (Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays from 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. and Saturdays until 3 p.m.)
