Alexis Henk, “Dance Studio,” Rockbridge County High School

My collection of photographs answers the question, "How do dancers express emotion through body language?" I chose to photograph dancers because I feel that they express themselves and their body language in a different way than the average person does. I photographed dancers in the studio against the same wall in order to give consistency throughout my portfolio. All of the photographs utilize natural light, preserving the natural state of the studio.

I enjoy using many different materials and combinations of mediums, from paint to charcoal to ink. My art is typically in a representational style as I seek to understand the world better, capture its beauty, and develop technical skill. While there is not one single issue around which my art is centered, I strive to discover story and beauty in whatever the subject is, be it a portrait or a landscape or a still life. I enjoy finding art in the ordinary, because it encourages me to view the world differently in my day-to-day life, teaching me to be more observant and take nothing for granted. Art has also helped me to connect with people in a different way, both in the study of faces and figures involved in portraiture, as well as sharing my art with people and learning how everyone has a different perspective that gives visual images deeper, personal meaning.
