Second Saturday Online Workshop: Introduction to Watercolor (Feb. 13 @ 2:00 p.m.)
This workshop is appropriate for painters from the age of 10 and up. (Participants younger than 18 must be registered by a parent or guardian.)
This class will introduce the beginning student to watercolor painting. We will go over the basic properties of watercolor paints and papers. We will also cover color blending in watercolor. The class will include a “pre-class” video on the basics and a live zoom session on painting a simple still life.
The class will be taught by Toni Bowman. Toni is a local artist and member for the FACNRV board. Samples of her work can be seen on the FACNRV blog Make Art: Artist at Home.
Objectives
Describe the different types of watercolor paper and the effect they have on watercolor paint
Cold pressed, Hot pressed, Rough, Hand made
Describe the different types of watercolor paints and the effect they have on the overall painting.
Pan, Tube, Liquid.
Demonstrate the qualities of paint on paper
Transparent vs. opaque
Blending colors on palette and paper
Demonstrate watercolor techniques
Wet into wet, Dry, Wet into dry, Dry into wet
Supply list (minimum):
Prang 8 color half pan semi moist set with brush (about $7.99 at Michaels or Hobby Lobby). If you cannot find Prang any of the student introduction sets will work. The artist suggests avoiding Crayola paint sets.
Strathmore watercolor cold pressed pad 9 x 12 (about $7.49)
You can use the brush in the Prang set or:
Golden fleece #8 round (8.89) and ½ in flat ($7.59 from Cheap Joe’s online) or
Winsor Newton Cotman #8 Round and ½-in flat (each approximately $8.99 from Michaels or Hobby Lobby)
Sharpie, pencil, good eraser
Small spray bottle
A cup or container for water
Paper towels
If you are ready to invest more in supplies, consider American Journey tube paints (available online from CheapJoes.com or other online stores) or Winsor Newton Tube colors (available from DickBlick.com). Michaels also carries Winsor Newton supplies. Many online art supply stores will carry these materials.
Tube colors: sap green, yellow ochre, burnt sienna, lemon yellow, cadmium yellow, cadmium yellow, Alizarin Crimson, ultramarine blue, cerulean blue
A simple palette can be found for $3 to $25 at Michaels or Hobby Lobby or most online shops.
Toni suggests Arches 140 lb. cold-pressed paper.
This workshop will be presented online via Zoom webconferencing software. You must have a device (desktop, laptop, tablet, phone, etc.) that supports audio and video to participate. Registrants will be emailed an individualized registration link.

Kit fee: Kits consisting of the Prang 8 color half pan and the Strathmore watercolor cold-pressed pad are available for purchase from the Fine Arts Center for $10.
