Second Saturday Workshop: Landscape Watercolors (June 12 @ 2:00 p.m.)

This class will introduce the beginning student to watercolor painting.  We will go over the basic wash techniques for skies and backgrounds. We will also cover color blending in watercolor.

The class will be taught by Toni Bowman. Toni is a local artist and member of the FACNRV board.  Samples of her work can be seen on the FACNRV blog Make Art: Artist at Home.

Objectives:

  1. Demonstrate basic wet into wet wash technique for skies and backgrounds

  2. Demonstrate basic techniques to obtain perspective in the landscape painting.

  3. Demonstrate watercolor techniques

    1. Wet into wet

    2. Dry

    3. Wet into dry

    4. Dry into wet

    5. The use of watercolor masking fluid (provided)

Supply list (minimum):

  • Prang 8-color half-pan semi-moist set with brush (about $7.99 Michaels or Hobby Lobby). If you cannot find Prang any of the student introduction sets will work.

  • Arteza 9X12 Expert Watercolor Pad 140 lb. cold pressed, acid free, 32 sheets ($14.99), or Strathmore watercolor cold pressed pad 9X12 ($7.49), or Arches Watercolor Paper Pad, 140 lb. cold press 9X12, 12 sheets ($24.99),

  • You can use the brush in the Prang set or:

    • Cheap Joes golden fleece #8 round ($8.89) and ½-in flat ($7.59) or

    • Winsor Newton Cotman #8 Round ($8.89) and ½-in flat ($8.99) found at Michaels or Hobby Lobby

  • Pencil, good eraser

  • Small spray bottle, water container/cup

  • Paper towels

Note: If you are ready to invest more in your supplies, you may enjoy American Journey tube paints from CheapJoes.com or Winsor Newton Tube colors from DickBlick.com. Michaels also carries Winsor Newton. There are other online stores, as well, where you can find many of these supplies. Some tube colors you may want to consider are: sap green, aureolin yellow, burnt sienna, lemon yellow, Alizarin Crimson, magenta, “Red Hot Momma” (Cheap Joes) otherwise known as naphthol red, ultramarine blue, cerulean blue, Prussian Blue.

A simple palette can be found for $3 to $25 at Michaels or Hobby Lobby or the online shops.
