Hatching and Cross-Hatching
Using parallel lines and intersecting lines helps an artist convey shading, contour, volume, and value (lighter to darker). Some art forms such as pen and ink drawing especially relies on the use of lines working in harmony with each other to create the dimensions of a building, or nature, or other subject matter. In these students’ drawings, their inspiration is the natural surroundings of Pulaski County with town buildings and the Blue Ridge Mountains in the background. Notice how the hatching (single lines) and cross-hatching (intersecting lines) adds to the feel of the mountain’s shape as well as perspective.
Want to explore making art using this technique for shading, tone, and value? You can find a very wide array of examples of drawings using hatching and cross-hatching on Pinterest! There are also quite a few “how-to” tutorials on Youtube for the art enthusiast.
The art from these talented student artists is displayed in the windows of Pulaski on Main at 87 W. Main St. Add 87 in the block labeled HATCH.
